Third petition - final one focusing on God, praying for God’s will to be done

This petition is a necessary compliment to second petition

Challenged by the relationship between prayer and faith

James 4:2b–3a ESV

2 You desire and do not have, so you murder. You covet and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel. You do not have, because you do not ask. 3 You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions.

James 4:3–4 ESV

3 You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions. 4 You adulterous people! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.

The reason for understanding the Lord’s prayer is so that we can align our expectations and longings to God’s will, and therefore see God answering our prayer - leads to more faith

Gives grounds for faith, because we know that God has revealed what is important, and what He has committed Himself to answering

God’s will and heaven

To understand both the heart of the petition, and the standard (“in heaven”) must look back at creation narrative

Notice in the constant phrase “And God saw that it was good”, ending off with “God saw…that it was very good”.

God’s creation was perfect and flawless and WAS WITH PURPOSE AND INTENTION

Humanity was made to obey, honour and serve God

Sin destroyed the relationship (Second petition) and corrupted humanity (Third petition)

Heaven now serves the example and standard of obedience and perfect

God’s will being done

We are NOT praying that God would be enabled to enact His will - He is supreme

We ARE praying for restoration of humanity to original purpose

We accept God’s will, even we don’t see/understand/like it

We understand the Scriptures, where God has revealed His will

We have greater empowerment in our will for increased obedience

Philippians 2:12–13 ESV

12 Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, 13 for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.

Conclusion

Last week, asked you to compile list of people who do not know Jesus; this week compile list of people who do, and pray for greater obedience to God
